HIKING and KAYAKING
The Mexican Border is at the southern
boundary of San Diego County. On the other side of the border
lies the fabled land of Baja California. We at The Marco Polo
Connection have a special relationship with this wild and rugged
Peninsular.
Over
many years we have travelled this wonderful place exploring the
mountains, deserts and shores by land and by
sea. We have scuba dived its azure seas and stood on its highest
mountains. We have greeted its warm Hispanic and Indian peoples
and slept nights out under the stars. We have marvelled at the
sighing sounds of Great Whales coming across the tranquil waters
of the Sea of Cortez and sailed its pristine waters in our own
flagship, "The Marco Polo." We first began exploring
this land over 30 years ago. The result of all this discovery is
that we have developed a love and respect for this grand land as
for no other place on earth.
It
is our privilage to offer to share our experience in this land.
There are a few times in the year when
we offer to guide hiking and kayaking tours both to the Sea of
Cortez and also on the Pacific side.We have a large selection of
equipment to rent and guide self-contained journeys of exploration
through this special place. We limit these trips to less than 6
participants. On one of our recent trips we explored the inland
water-way from Lopez Mateo down to Magdalena Bay. We camped on
desolate sand dunes under a brilliant tropical moon and paddled
for over 50 miles down the mangrove swamps of this pristine area.
The birdlife in this area is prolific as is the land fauna. For
5 days we saw no-one but ourselves and shared these wild unvisited
beaches only with Grey Whales, Coyote, the ragged cry of sea-birds
and always, the wind, sculpting the dunes at our feet. We believe
that life is a journey and also that it is more important to emphasise
the way that you travel rather than to understand the destination.
On our return journey to the USA we visited one of the fabulous
prehistoric cave paintings in the Sierra San Francisco and visited
for a night in the little hacienda at San Ignacio.
If you would are
